Dignitary Of Protection Formations

Tomer Israeli - Head of School

Why we need a formation during executive protection mission ?

The planning process of a dignitary of protection mission never stops. From the moment you are hired to the time you go back home at the end of another "hopefully" no special events day. You are consistently trying to better the plan and execution of the protection operation. All of that in-order to establish the best possible tactical position before the attack or / and prevent possible attack by deter attacker from either getting closer to collect more info or / and decide all together that the executive security detail he faces are top notch professionals that better not to mess with them.

How to create tactical advantage during simple movement with the VIP ?

Some Important Assumptions before we start:

-The VIP is relatively in a peaceful environment meaning no meaningful threat is visible.

-The principal won't mind to be seen with bodyguards around him

-The Security Agents are armed with concealed carry / possible also open carry depends of location and circumstances

One Men Formation

Required when the VIP is on the move or between movements for example during a walk on the sidewalk heading a restaurant alone or a together with the wife or peers (No.1 Blue is the Bodyguard)

Tactical ideas:

-Sector of fire open is 360 - Right handed position on the right side of the VIP to allow draw of the gun and move the VIP from the line of fire

-Visual 360 required all the time

Weakness:

- In this formation the challenge is to handle multiple events including diversions and actual attacks simultaneously - since the operator is alone.

Strengths:

-The small formation may NOT attract attention

Two Men Formation

Required when the VIP is on the move or between movements for example during a walk on the sidewalk heading a restaurant alone or a together with the wife or peers

Tactical ideas:

-Sector of fire open is still 360 - with consideration not to risk the team member and of course not to risk the VIP

-Visual 360 required all the time by the team meaning -No.1 would scan to the back in priority while the No.2 would be more oriented to potential threats from the front.

-Both agents would give support to each other

-No.2 have flexibility to move forward as necessary , depends on situation like closed dense crowed he will stay close while if the threat potential is more distant the No. 2 can move in a greater distance (We preferred not to lose eye contact with the VIP or No.2)

-Covert protection No.2 may function as undercover during the advanced work to add the element of surprise if needed.

Weakness:

- In this formation the challenge is still to handle multiple attackers including diversions and actual attacks simultaneously - although No.1 is NOT alone.

- Still both of the operators need to engage threats together and depend on each other

Strengths:

-The small formation may NOT attract attention

Three Men Formation

Required when the VIP is on the move or between movements for example during a walk on the sidewalk heading a restaurant alone or a together with the wife or peers

Tactical ideas:

-Sector of fire open is still 360 - with consideration not to risk the team members and of course not to risk the VIP

-Visual 360 required all the time by the team meaning -No.1 would scan to the back in priority while the No.2 would be more oriented to potential threats from the front and No.3 would be where ever he's needed the most depends on the threats or potential threats.

-All agents would give support to each other

-No.2,3 have flexibility to move forward as necessary , depends on situation like closed dense crowed he will stay close while if the threat potential is more distant the No. 2 can move in a greater distance (We preferred not to lose eye contact with the VIP or No.2,3)

-Covert protection No.2,3 may function as undercover during the advanced work to add the element of surprise if needed.

Weakness:

- In this formation the challenge is still to handle multiple attackers including diversions and actual attacks simultaneously - although No.1 is NOT alone.

- Still both of the operators need to engage threats together and depend on each other.

- The formation stay together may attract attention - highly recommended to consider to split the formation to under cover squad and No.1 closer - all depends on threat assessment.

Strengths:

- Relatively strong show of power that with consideration of cover story, tactical position and advance work would be able to challenge potential aggressors.

Allow more flexibility and use the men power for driving - advancing to the next location and shifts between the operators for resting, breaks during the schedule.
